About the Client:

Slovak Innovation and Energy Agency (SIEA) is a contributory organization established by the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic with ambition to raise awareness about energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and innovations in all fields of economy and provide expert consulting and education in those areas.

They prepare background materials for annual evaluation of progress towards national targets and action plans for energy efficiency and contribute to implementing measures supported by EU funds and state resources, which are focused on energy demand decrease, introduction of low carbon technologies, competitiveness growth, innovative solutions and smart specialization of economy.

Context of the project:

In the context of the EU’s greenhouse gas reduction targets, each member state has prepared its own target area for renewable energy sources (RES), which will lead to the decarbonisation of specific sectors. One of the areas in which the policy of higher use of RES will be driven is the support of the production of green hydrogen and its use in transport, especially where decarbonization in the form of battery electric cars is complicated – for example in the mass transport of goods. European directives set the share of zero-emission vehicles in new procurement at 8% by 2025 and 9% from 2026.

The SIEA representatives had decided to execute the project which will deliver the feasibility study to identify ways of using renewable energy sources for road freight transport. The role of Aspiro was to analyze the possibilities and scenarios of the use of RES and hydrogen in various types of road freight transport and to prepare a feasibility study, including a financial model for individual variants.

Description of actual services provided by the staff within the assignment:

Aspiro researched and drafted several business scenarios for various alternatives of using hydrogen in road freight transport, their financial models and design parameters for:
– use of RES/green hydrogen in the so-called “Last mile delivery”, means a transport operation which involves the delivery of goods to a final customer over short distance,
– use of RES/green hydrogen in regional transport over medium distances, especially between individual suppliers within regions,
– use of RES/green hydrogen in long-distance truck transport on busy routes within the Slovak Republic,
– the possibility to produce own green hydrogen to cover the required consumption within the national target for the number of vehicles.

The financial model defined the necessary investment incentives, operating costs for hydrogen vehicles and also included trends in diesel and hydrogen prices and worked with the assumptions resulting from market and legislative analysis.

Aspiro also prepared a feasibility study for the identified scenarios and their comprehensive comparison:
– definition of market and regulatory trends and priorities in the Slovak Republic and the EU,
– costs and revenues of individual scenarios,
– environmental benefits and CO2 emissions reduced,
– definition of technical parameters of individual compared vehicle models,
– analysis of investment financing options from various Slovak and European grant mechanisms and structures,
– draft implementation plans for the deployment of selected scenario,
– a list of possible financial, political and market risks during implementation.

Client Testimonial:

Aspiro team was responsible for the preparation of the feasibility study to identify ways of using renewable energy sources for road freight transport. The project activities and the deliverables were delivered with overall quality that have confirmed their professional work. The structured approach and presented results delivered by Aspiro team allowed us to understand all alternatives for usage of hydrogen for our future project, as well as to prepare different financial options and outline the implementation roadmap for all scenarios. Cooperating with Aspiro team became a great asset to us and laid a solid foundation for the future realization of the following projects.”
